What causes anxiety in dogs?

Storms associated with loud thunder or rain on the roof are also a very common trigger of dog anxiety, as are car travel or separation from their owners.

Dogs can express anxiety in many ways. Common symptoms are trembling, panting, whining, or barking. Many become restless and they will often pace. Some dogs become destructive and paw the door, windowsill, or floor while outside dogs may escape by digging under or jumping over the fence.
Some seek the comfort of their owners, while others will try to hide in confined areas.
Regardless of the symptoms, anxiety is miserable for both dogs and their owners and the results can be dangerous. Dogs that escape may get hit by a car.
